Cloud Computing Expo - Intel Ships Halogen-Free Xeons
Intel Launched Its Halogen-Free Xenos - Xeon 5200 and 5400 Series Will Also Be Halogen-Free Too

Intel Monday launched its first halogen-free Xeons and said all existing versions of the Xeon 5200 and 5400 series will now be halogen-free too.

According to their creator, the four new quad-core chips “reach new heights in performance and energy efficiency” and that’s largely because of Intel’s 45nm manufacturing process.

Three of the new chips are designated the X5492, X5470 and L5430 processors, all part of the 5400 Series, the fastest of has a clock speed of 3.4GHz. The low voltage version uses only 50 watts of power, 12.5 watts per core. The X5270 runs as low as 80 watts at frequencies as high as 3.5GHz.

The processors are drop-in compatible with existing Intel dual processor platforms that have been in the market since 2006.

Prices range from $562 to $1,493 in 1,000-unit quantities.
