The Golf Channel Installs Scientific-Atlanta PowerVu System for Digital Feeds to North America, Asia and Europe
- Digital content distribution system includes encoders, receivers, conditional access and network management and control -

LAS VEGAS, April 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NAB 2005 Booth #SU7848 -- The Golf Channel has installed a complete Scientific-Atlanta PowerVu(R) digital content distribution system at its Orlando, FL headquarters to deliver digital program feeds to North America, Asia and Europe.

Each continent receives unique Golf Channel programming from a separate PowerVu encoding system. The three encoding systems are managed by a single PowerVu Network Centre, enabling The Golf Channel's staff to monitor and control all of its digital content distribution in North America, Asia and Europe from one site.

"We have enjoyed very reliable delivery of our digital content to Asia and Europe since our new PowerVu systems were installed and look forward to launching digital delivery to North America," said Mark Coleman, senior vice president of network operations and new technology at The Golf Channel. "Because the PowerVu system can deliver signals for use in both NTSC and DVB headends, it was a great, streamlined solution for both our domestic and international delivery of programming."

The digitally encoded PowerVu signal for Europe goes via fiber from Orlando to Europe for retransmission. The Asia programming goes via fiber to Napa, CA where it is uplinked over a PanAmSat PowerVu system for delivery across the Asia-Pacific region. The North American digital signal will be simulcast with the analog programming using Scientific-Atlanta's side carrier feature. This enables programmers to introduce a digital service within the same satellite transponder space as the analog signal. As a result, The Golf Channel can optimize the performance of its transponder space and deliver video in two formats to support the varied needs of its affiliates.

"The PowerVu Network Centre provides powerful conditional access and receiver authorization safeguards to protect The Golf Channel's valuable programming," said Paul Kosac, vice president of market development, Media Networks/Headend, Transmission Network Systems at Scientific-Atlanta. "The PowerVu receivers deployed by The Golf Channel have the powerful features needed for today, and future-friendly capabilities, such as IP outputs, to accommodate new distribution avenues."
