Microsoft MSN Client Vulnerability Affects Instant Messaging
Advisory Comes from IMlogic

Once exploited, a vulnerability in MSN Client allows a remote user to launch malicious code on an infected computer with all of the same permissions and privileges of the infected user, according to an advisory from IMlogic.

The company is warning customers that the vulnerability exists for version 6.2 and version 7.0 beta of the MSN IM client. It is caused by an error within the processing of GIF images, and can be exploited by sending a modified emoticon or display picture to a user.

IMlogic is urging its customers to visit a special landing page at its website to learn more: www.imlogic.com/im_threat_center/index.asp

An official announcement from the company tells customers "to (be sure that all desktop systems have been updated with the latest security patches and that all out of date clients have been blocked from accessing the MSN network. IMlogic IM Manager provides the capability to block out-of-date clients ensuring enterprise security against client vulnerabilities."

As a tech consultant, I have seen so many companies get burned by IM viruses that it is becoming a bigger problem than E-mail threats. E-mail is pretty secure now so virus writers are moving to the path of least resistance. I have clients who got the bropia virus on MSN IM but the IM Logic product filtered it our before it could get to any users/d-tops. Anyone who deals with IT security should sign up for the threat center they have on their site. I spend more time dealing with IM now than e-mail.
