Airline Pilots Tell of Terrorist Website
Flight Paths, Other Details Could Aid Shoulder-Fired Missiles

Recent reports show that terrorist organizations are procuring shoulder-fired missiles to attack flights within the United States, a threat that is not being taken seriously enough by the Department of Homeland Security and other government agencies, according to the Coalition of Airline Pilots Associations (CAPA).

CAPA released an advisory to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security this morning, pointing to a recent NBC News report that described detailed instructions on smuggling and firing these weapons on an Arabic website used by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the most wanted terrorist in Iraq. The information contains diagrams of terrorists firing a missile at an airliner from a rooftop, and describes tactics to evade capture afterwards.

The website displayed flight paths and security perimeters at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, and someone identifying himself as Zarqawi closes by saying, "This is what I have for now. I hope it is useful for my dear brothers."

CAPA also says that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) uncovered a major arms-smuggling scheme in New York last month that sought to import shoulder-fired missiles, grenade launchers and other munitions from the former Soviet Union.

"About 700,000 shoulder-fired missiles have been manufactured worldwide over the past three decades," said Capt. Jon Safley, president of CAPA. "These weapons are cheap, plentiful and deadly. American airliners taking off and landing could easily become vulnerable at many U.S. airports."
