Microsoft Gets SQL Server 2005 Back On Track
New SQL Server 2005 Technical Preview Released

Microsoft has released an interim "preview" of its SQL Server 2005 edition. This is the third technical preview of SQL Server 2005 so far. Microsoft said it will introduce a beta edition in late March that will be available to everyone.

The latest CTP (community technical preview) includes a new report builder and Management Studio features, along with 64-bit support. To allow some of its other products keep pace with SQL Server 2005 release, Microsoft will also post more Visual Studio 2005 bits so the recently released Visual Studio CTP works with this latest code.

Solution providers are anxiously awaiting the upcoming database along with the closely allied Visual Studio 2005 tool set. Many expect to develop business intelligence applications with the software's bulked-up analytics, reporting, and OLAP tools.

Microsoft said this third technical preview will in all likelihood be the last, and that beta editions of the database will role out as planned. It said a beta edition of SQL is still on track for the first quarter this year.

It is thought that aggressive price moves by Oracle and IBM, both of which are extending their databases to reach smaller companies, is partly responsible for Microsoft's renewed focus keeping to release dates. The final version of SQL Server 2005, which had been scheduled for the end of last year, is slated for this summer.
