Oracle & VMware Cozy Up

VMware and Oracle's Server Technologies Division are in the process of formalizing a deal to do cooperative product development, performance engineering and marketing.

The deal will include Oracle customer problem resolution and support.

Oracle said it would market solutions based on VMware that focus on hardware containment, cost savings, rightsizing, migrations and co-existence strategies.

Oracle VP Prem Kumar called VMware Oracle's "standard virtualized development platform" on both Windows and Linux and said Oracle's 10g infrastructure software would be optimized for VMware. That software includes Oracle's database, its application server, Enterprise Manager and Collaboration Suite.

Oracle intends to deploy upwards of 7,000 VMware virtual machines internally.

Oracle already offers an evaluation version of its 10g database within the VMware virtual infrastructure and has distributed a reported 12,000 copies so far.

Meanwhile, VMware has released ESX Server 2.5 and VirtualCenter 1.2, its latest dot releases, meant to integrate more fully with storage and provide additional disaster recovery and blade server support.

VirtualCenter includes the company's Virtual Infrastructure SDK that provides the so-called web services APIs for integrating the widgetry with third-party management software. It decouples application workloads from the underlying physical hardware and makes it possible for applications to be deployed across a pool of physical servers. It manages the ESX server farm.

The 2.5 rev of ESX will boot from a SAN so virtual machines can run on diskless servers and blades. It also provides native SAN access from within virtual machines so guest operating systems can now directly access extended SAN functionality as if they were running directly on the physical hardware. ESX installation has been automated and there's expanded hardware and OS support including FreeBSD 4.9, Windows Small Business Server 2003 and SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.

Shrewd move. Storage virtualization will be a key foundation technology that enables the development of heterogeneous storage services, which, in turn, will help enable emerging computing models, including ILM and utility computing.
