i-Technology Milestone: 934 Million People Worldwide Are Currently Online

According to ClickZ Stats, the trends and statistics analyst that was formerly called CyberAtlas, the worldwide Internet population in 2004 reached 934 million. In the US, the total of online citizens is 185 million out of a total population of 290 million; in China the total is 99 million out of 1.28 billion.

Other leading Net-connected countries are UK (33 million), South Korea (31 million), Russia (21 million), Japan (78 million), India (36 million), Italy (25 million), Germany (41 million), France (25 million), and Brazil (22 million).

  • 50% of Internet traffic passes through Virginia
  • 95% of US car buyers research online
  • 4 million Americans are accessing Internet from place other than home or work
  • 88% of Americans say internet plays a major role in their life

    The same outfit claims that by 2007 that number will climb to 1.7 Billion...but how do they reach these "milestone" numbers, does anyone know? Are they just wild-assed guesses (WAGs) or are they actually empirically correct?

    Oddly the UK is currently ranked ahead of US for broadband competitiveness, and by 2005 Britain is expected to be able to boast the most extensive and competitive broadband market of any G7 nation - so, when will we catch up in the USA?
