Apple Upgrades Xserve RAID: Storage at $2.32 a Gigabyte

Apple has enhanced its Xserve RAID storage system to provide up to 5.6TB of capacity.

At its maximum capacity, the new rack storage system features 14 400GB drives with 8MB of cache per drive.

The upgrade also includes dual RAID controllers with 512MB of cache per controller and dual 2GB Fibre Channel ports with 200 Mbps throughput per channel.

Previously, Xserve supported a maximum 3.5TB.

Xserve RAID is designed to avoid vulnerability at a single point of failure and is built around a so-called midplane with a passive data path, an approach that, as Apple says, isn't common in other storage systems of its kind. The midplane is the central connector between the drives, RAID controllers, power supplies and cooling modules.

The 3U widget is optimized for Apple's upcoming Xsan SAN file system.

Apple is offering Xserve RAID in three configurations: a 1TB version priced at $6,000, a 2.8TB one priced at $8,500 and the 5.6TB version costing $13,000. All include a Java-based management tool.

Apple claims that with the upgrade, it's got the price of its storage down to $2.32 a gigabyte compared to $3 a gig before.

Xserve RAID supports heterogeneous environments including Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2003 Server, XP Pro, NetWare 5, 6 and 6.5, Red Hat and now SuSE Linux.

Xserve RAID is supposed to connect easily to any Xserve server or Power Mac desktop via Apple's dual-channel 2GB Fibre Channel PCI-X card, which sells separately for $500.

The Xserve RAID upgrade is available through Apple's online store and the company's resellers.
