EMC Introduces Low-Cost Celerra Network for Wider NAS Implementation

Information and storage management leader EMC introduced its Celerra NS500 system, a new, low-cost network attached storage (NAS) system.

The NS500 debuted along with improved application connectivity via iSCSI and enhanced management capabilities. By extending entry into what is already the industry's broadest NAS product family, EMC is focusing on making network storage more flexible and affordable to a wider range of customers.

Customers, says EMC, will have a less-costly means of accessing the powerful functionality of Celerra's NAS family. Compared to systems that have similar configurations, industry benchmarks show it offers better performance. Moreover, with Celerra's new NS704G NAS gateway, industry leading performance is available for mid-tier NAS requirements, the company notes. Customers that implement Celerra's gateway-configured systems will be able to keep their existing systems that now can be leveraged in ways not possible before, short of replacing components.

EMC offered, as a case in point, how one law firm was able to realize functionality on their existing systems that otherwise would have required very costly upgrades. Law firm Smith Anderson, in Raleigh, North Carolina, needed to provide access to documents and applications to its nearly 100 attorneys . Lories Beam, the firm's Director of Information Technology, elaborated on the technology the mid-sized firm wanted, but was not available, until the release of EMC's latest offering.

"There are not many products," she said, "that combine the advanced NAS and SAN features we need and are affordable for a firm of our size. EMC's Celerra NAS gateway turned out to be the perfect fit. Now that our legal staff has faster access to critical documents and applications, we're more productive and are delivering more responsive client service. We gain the benefits of a SAN without having to buy Fibre switches. We're lowering management costs through server and storage consolidation and the product's automatic monitoring and troubleshooting. We also like that we purchased the product from EMC - a financially stable vendor with a reputation for exceptional customer support."

What allowed for the integration of storage and servers into a single platform was a brand new DART operating environment that EMC also released to satisfy improved application connectivity customers were requesting.

Managers now have access to information regarding system performance that is available quickly and in a manner that is easily read, says EMC. This "at-a-glance" monitoring feature displays systems memory and CPU usage and performance. Users will be able to perform data recovery that has been enabled through integration with Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS). File-level restoration can be achieved in this manner by MS Explorer's property tab. Information pertaining to individual network connections, is much more thorough as well, further increasing the amount and variety of data on systems' performance.

Tony Asaro, Analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group, summarized the overall improvements of EMC's NAS product line, achieved with the new release:

"The combination of their EMC Celerra NS704G NAS gateway, the low-end NS500, iSCSI support and an easy- to-use management GUI gives customers a compelling set of solutions from EMC, a leading storage vendor that offers world-class support. It isn't just one offering but a product family that can address the requirements of different customers and environments. EMC is listening to their customers and responding to the needs of the market."

Regarding improved functionality that can be achieved with EMC's Celerra, David Donatelli, EMC Executive Vice President of Storage Platform Operations, stressed the less complicated way processes can be carried out. Donatelli said, "EMC's innovation and leadership in NAS gateway technology is providing customers with solutions that are easy-to-manage-and-deploy and help make their businesses run smoother and more efficiently. These new products further demonstrate EMC's commitment to delivering cost-effective and flexible network storage solutions to help tackle our customers' most critical business needs."
