McDATA and QLogic Announce Comprehensive SAN Initiative

McDATA Corporation, a network storage solutions provider, and QLogic, which powers storage area networks (SAN), have announced an initiative designed to enable greater support and interoperability of SANs, especially in global, multi-vendor blade server environments. The goal the companies are shooting for is seamless interoperability across McDATA's full range of products, including Eclipse, Sphereon and Intrepid-brand switches, and SANbox brand switches from QLogic.

The reason for the union, according to both companies, is to provide services to companies that are building core-to-edge global storage networks that will be fully functional with the latest hardware and software on the market.

McDATA senior vice president of marketing, Jeff Vogel, said:

"Our technology partnership with QLogic enables on-demand data access through full interoperability while ensuring easy access to new functionality. This partnership will allow customers to deploy an architecture capable of secure access to data anytime, anywhere, and McDATA a timely entrance to new and emerging markets while focusing on our core business."

QLogic's marketing division released a similar statement, "Customers are asking QLogic for SAN routing solutions that span from core-to-edge. The crux of QLogic and McDATA achieving switch-to-switch interoperability for global SANs is to include a wide range of switches in our global SAN initiative."

The two companies, it is expected, will lower data-storage costs for customers. By providing scalable environments, the need to replace entire information architectures can be put off, they say. According to McDATA, they see more and more companies turning to blade servers. As such, these environments must provide compliance between existing enterprise SAN solutions, and embedded Fiber Channel switches.
