i-Technology Quote of the Week: SP2 as the "Cod Liver Oil of Software Upgrades"

"Nasty but good for you," writes BusinessWeek's Stephen H. Wildstrom in the BusinessWeek online edition dated August 30 (sic).

He is referring to SP2, published on August 6 and an outgrowth, as Wildstrom explains it, of Microsoft's "two-year-old initiative to fix Windows' pervasive security problems."

"It marks a reversal of Microsoft philosophy that routinely favored convenience over security," Wildstrom adds.

But his best phrasemanship he reserved for this part of his piece:

"Microsoft has always promoted new versions of Windows by talking up features designed to make computer use easier and more fun. The prosaically named Windows XP Service Pack 2 is starkly different. While it amounts to a major release in size and scope, it could also be called the cod liver oil of software upgrades: nasty but good for you."

This is far and away the Best i-Technology Quote of the week: Mr Wildstrom, for dubbing SP2 "the cod liver oil of software upgrades," we salute you!
