Sun's New Global Government Office to Advance Secure Network Computing Solutions Worldwide

Sun Microsystems has created a new Global Government Office and has named Clark Masters as its first executive vice president. Masters' mission will include addressing the needs of governments worldwide, bringing to bear Sun's global research and development efforts for secure network computing architectures, and to ensure new technology advancements meet the needs of citizens here and abroad. As part of this move, Masters also assumes the position of President, Sun Microsystems Federal, Inc.

"We're mobilizing and globalizing Sun's government business and extending our partnerships to deliver the most secure, world-class solutions on the planet," said Masters. "Government sales present huge opportunities for Sun with increased focus worldwide on security solutions, e-government projects and new compliance requirements."

At the core of Sun's solutions for secure computing in the government sector is the Trusted Solaris Operating System, the platform standard for all US government secure communications. The Trusted Solaris OS delivers built-in network security on a commercial-grade, general-purpose OS, offering privacy, increased accountability and reduced risk of security violations.

As part of its push to better serve government entities in less developed and least developed countries, Sun also recently announced per-citizen pricing for federal, state and local governments of developing nations that will allow provinces, states and cities to take advantage of special licensing offers for the Sun Java Enterprise System. Pricing ranges from USD $0.33 to $1.95 per citizen per year, and is determined based on two factors: the number of citizens in the respective government entity and the stage of development of the country as defined by the United Nations' Department of Economic and Social Affairs classification.
