McNealy Announces Alliance to Spur Adoption of Java in Greater China

(October 27, 2003) - To build on the growing momentum that is fuelling adoption of Java technology in Greater China, Sun Microsystems' chairman, president, and CEO Scott McNealy has announced the launch of a region-wide alliance on Java technology. Riding on the launch earlier this year of Sun's Java Center of Excellence (JCOE) program, the alliance will bring the value and skills of Java programming and architecturing to Sun's customers throughout China.

McNealy made the announcement during a visit to Shanghai, where he spoke at an inauguration ceremony attended by some of the first members of the new alliance. They included Hong Kong partners Global Network Solutions Asia Limited, Automated Systems (Hong Kong) Limited and Excel Technology International (Hong Kong) Limited, Taiwan partners Cradle Technology, Stark Technology, Everlite Technology and China partners Modern Devices, BJ Teamsun, UFSoft, NEUSoft and Digital China.

China's software industry grew by 40 percent in 2002 to reach 110-billion Yuan (US$13.3 billion) and it is forecast to continue growing at 30-35 percent a year. However, domestically developed software still accounts for less then one-third of the local Chinese market and less than two per cent of the global software trade.

Sun hopes that Java technology will help China's software industry reach its full potential which leading analyst firms predict could see it rival the current regional software giant, India, by 2006. Sun Microsystems is playing a central role in helping to accelerate China's software industry development by delivering tools and support that will empower Java developers including recent support for the simplified Chinese language in both the NetBeans 3.5.1 release and in its Sun ONE Studio 5, Standard Edition product. The NetBeans integrated development environment (IDE) is available for free download in Chinese at www.netbeans.org/chinese/. One of the world's fastest growing, most widely adopted and, critically, one of the most interoperable software development platforms, Java technology could play a major role in helping China make the transition from importer to net exporter of software. Sun plans to allow JCOE partners that have built certified Java expertise to become members of the alliance on Java technology.
