At JavaOne, Sun Launches New Products and Programs to Unite Wireless Java Community

(June 10, 2003) - Sun Microsystems, Inc. has launched a comprehensive mobile developer program and joined forces with wireless industry leaders to announce an industry initiative for application testing to help the wireless industry bring Java technology-based applications and services to market more quickly and cost effectively. Sun also announced plans to launch an end-to-end mobile enterprise development platform to help service providers and enterprises quickly extend their current IT investments into 2.5 and 3G wireless networks.

"Java technology, and the community of millions of Java developers, have made mobility with security a reality with mass deployments over multiple networks, devices and technology platforms," said Alan Brenner, vice president, Consumer and Mobile Systems Group, Sun Microsystems. "Java technology is at the heart of wireless network computing from the device via the J2ME technology platform, to the datacenter via the J2ME technology standard. Our announcements today continue this parallel momentum and will enable developers to rapidly monetize their mobile Java applications and target a global market of wireless operators, device manufacturers and hundreds of millions of end-users."

The J2ME platform is currently used on more than 94 million handsets and 53 wireless carriers, with 14 announced in the last year, representing 55 percent annual growth.

Motorola, Nokia, Siemens, Sony Ericsson, and Sun announced plans to unify their application testing and certification programs into a single initiative to help accelerate the availability of applications and services for Java technology-enabled mobile devices. The agreement sets common certification criteria for content testing that the participants aim to make a symbol of quality in the wireless industry. Sun also will license a Java logo for applications verified against the unified test criteria.

Sun also launched a new www.sun.com/developers/mobility_program ">Sun Developer Network Mobility Program to provide members with resources to create, test, and verify J2ME technology-based applications and market them to consumers and enterprises. These resources include specialized software and tools, targeted technical training and support, design blueprints, technical forums, user groups, and access to go-to-market services. Other program elements enable developers to earn the Java technology brand seal of approval by testing and certifying their J2ME applications. Once certified, applications can be submitted to the Sun Content Catalog, a business-to-business portal accessible by participating operators and device manufacturers, accelerating business growth. Sun will also help developers drive user awareness and demand by hosting their mobile Java content on www.java.com.

Sun plans to expand its focus on mobility solutions aimed at speeding Java technology-based services to market with the release of the Sun ONE Portal Server, Mobile Access 6.2 product. Version 6.2 extends the capabilities of the Sun ONE Portal Server to provide access to personalized data and information anytime, anyplace from any wireless browser or Java technology-enabled device. It will include the Sun ONE Mobile Application Builder, which enables developers to easily design, build and deploy wireless applications.

In addition Sun announced the Business Mobility Initiative, a program that leverages the combined expertise of Sun and its partners to deliver mobile business solutions. The Business Mobility Initiative will deliver vertical industry-specific mobile business solutions based on components delivered by Sun and its iForce and network operator partners including Nextel, Aether Systems, Lucent Technologies, Aligo, and EDS. Using Sun's iForce Centers, customers can perform a proof-of-concept for a specific business scenario or create an end-to-end solution for their industry vertical.
