OSS/J Proves "Massive Scalability" of Standards-Based Telecommunications Solution

(April 30, 2003) - Benchmark results from the OSS through Java™ Initiative (OSS/J) Massive Scalability focus group prove the scalability of an integrated, carrier-grade Operations Support Systems (OSS) environment built using J2EE and XML technologies under real-world conditions. This highly scalable, service-oriented environment, which adheres to OSS/J standards and design guidelines, demonstrated a self-service telecommunications customer portal handling a sustained rate of over 16.2 million concurrent customer queries per hour and over 270,000 new order requests per hour.

"We have proven that we are far past the days when scalability was an issue for Java and XML," says Brian Naughton, director of telecommunications at Sonic Software, which led the effort to prove OSS scalability. "The maturity of the J2EE application framework allows us to provide linear scalability and performance that is truly carrier-grade."

"These benchmarks prove that Java and XML-based telecommunications solutions have the performance and scalability requirements to open existing OSS applications to millions of customers," said Philippe Lalande, Sun Microsystems, the Initiative's program manager. "Massive and reliably scalable integration infrastructure is essential for today's telecommunications operations, which need to integrate hundreds or even thousands of disparate core applications, including large numbers of proprietary, legacy applications."

The Massive Scalability benchmarks took place at Sun Microsystems' Garrison Labs in Menlo Park, CA. Sun hosted the lab environment, and provided the computing hardware and resources to ensure an OSS scenario simulating typical service provider conditions. The demonstration used integration products from Sonic Software (Sonic XIS and SonicMQ), BEA (WebLogic Enterprise Server), Sun (SunONE Application Server 7) and IP Value's OSS/J compliant service activation system, premioss.

The Massive Scalability white paper, along with a discussion of the results, is available for download from the OSS/J section of Sonic's Web site
