Nextel, EDS, and Sun Align to Develop Wireless Data Solutions

(November 22, 2002) - A new mobile portal solution, developed jointly by Nextel Communications, Inc., EDS, and Sun Microsystems, Inc., securely extends the functionality of the Sun ONE platform to J2ME technology-enabled Nextel handsets and wireless-enabled devices. The mobile portal solution is expected to be widely available to enterprise customers later this year.

This mobile portal solution enables a personalized, customizable interface to provide an enterprise's employees, customers, and partners with a secure, single point of entry to company information, applications, and services. Functionality extended to enterprise employees could include product updates, real-time visibility into sales inventory, sales force automation, and access to corporate directory and benefits, anytime, anywhere, and on any Nextel Java technology-enabled device.

Last year, Nextel became the first U.S. wireless carrier to deploy Java technology-enabled handsets. The advantages of J2ME technology include persistent memory, rich graphical user interface, and the ability to run applications in and out of network coverage.
