vcEmulator Provides Java-Based 3270 and 5250 Terminal Emulation

(October 29, 2002) -- GT Software has released its vcEmulator, a Java-based terminal emulation software solution providing powerful client access to host systems. vcEmulator enables organizations to make host-based applications available via the Internet or corporate intranet.

vcEmulator's two-tiered approach eliminates the requirement for additional servers or host-installed software; providing a cost-effective method of delivering highly scalable client access to legacy systems. A small footprint Java application is installed on the client machine to provide access to 3270 and 5250 based applications. This Java application can be remotely installed, configured, and maintained.

vcEmulator provides access to legacy applications on IBM mainframe (Z-series, S/390) and IBM midrange (As/400, i-Series) systems from any client including Windows 95, 98, NT, XP and 2000, also UNIX, Mac and LINUX. It provides support for European and Asian character sets. It also has cut and paste capability, user definable keyboard mapping, macro support, definable color mapping and secure FTP support. vcEmulator uses the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol to provides secure connections.

SuSE Linux comes with a 3270 terminal emulator and a 5250 emulator, both in C. It would be fairly simple to port these to Java, especially since Java would deal with the networking stuff easily. Then you could build some kind of server that the emulator could connect to that would pipe the network traffic from the server the program was downloaded from (if it was used as an applet) to the machine you wanted to telnet to.

Might be an interesting project.
