Motorola's Mobile Services Cafe Powers O2 Games Arcade

(September 12, 2002) -- mmO2 and Motorola, Inc. have introduced a new downloadable entertainment service that provides consumers with the ability to personalize and differentiate their mobile phones. Motorola's Mobile Services Cafe is a managed service powered by Motorola's download server with J2ME technology. Motorola will supply and operate its server for O2's new commercial games service, the O2 games arcade, bringing a more exciting gaming experience to mobile phones. Consumers can choose mobile games such as retro classics Breakout, Asteroids, and Pong from Atari.

Some of the graphically rich wireless games being offered by O2 games arcade are made available from Motorola's mobile game publishing arm and were launched for the UK market at the beginning of September, and will be available in the German, Netherlands, and Irish markets in early October.

Motorola will shortly extend the technologies within Mobile Services Cafe by integrating the Pecan games platform from Cash-U. The platform will enhance the mobile games experience by initially enabling consumers to post high scores. These services will be enhanced over time, and game players will be able to compete against other subscribers throughout the O2 network.

O2 chose Mobile Services Cafe to launch O2's own portfolio of downloadable J2ME games. Motorola will provide all the back-end support and operate the system as a managed service integrated into O2's branded portal. Motorola is supplying Mobile Services Cafe on a risk/reward basis, reducing O2's financial exposure while giving O2 the control and flexibility to select game content and user experience.
