HHP Offers the First Mobile Data Collection Terminals to Support Java Virtual Machine

(July 16, 2002) - HHP has announced the offering of the DolphinTM 7400 and 7450 line of mobile computers with support for the Insignia SolutionsTM JeodeTM Java Virtual Machine (JVM) runtime software. The Dolphin 7400 and 7450 are the first mobile data collection terminals in the industry to support the JVM runtime software. The Insignia JVM Software is a SunTM Authorized Virtual Machine, and is the first independently developed virtual machine to pass Sun's PersonalJavaTM .2 and EmbeddedJavaTM 1.0.3 test suites. This certification ensures that the Dolphin 7400/7500 JVM platform maintains full compliance with Sun's standard PersonalJava specifications.

Sun Microsystems estimates that there are currently 2.4 million Java developers and that the percentage of Java-based applications will increase 60 percent in 2004. This platform is viewed as an excellent vehicle for providing Dolphin RF WLAN terminals with a high degree of security and the benefits of distributed computing, such as cross-platform support, dynamic extensibility and network awareness. " HHP is excited about the relationship with Insignia and Sun and what Java-based software can do for this product line," said Gregory Payne, product manager, Mobile Products. "Basically, the same programs that run on your desktop PC will also run on your Dolphin 7400/7450 mobile computer."

The Java platform provides software developers with a platform for rapid application development, making it possible to deliver products to market in Internet time. This platform resists traditional software development and deployment models by delivering on the promise of cross-platform capability. According to Payne, "The JVM technology provides the necessary runtime environment needed to interface into the growing Java-based mobile application marketplace and allows developers to use industry standard development tools."

With headquarters in Skaneateles Falls, NY, HHP is a worldwide leading solutions provider for image-based data collection systems for mobile, wireless, and transaction processing solutions. Formerly known as Hand Held Products, a Welch Allyn affiliate, HHP is dedicated to delivering breakthrough technology, reliability and durability to its customers and partners through more than 30 sales offices and hundreds of resellers.
