Leading the Web Services Race from the Front - SilverStream

(March 25, 2002) - Shortly after it first went public back in August 1999, SilverStream Software quickly acquired first GemLogic, the maker of XML Integration, and then ObjectEra, the maker of JBroker. It was determined from the get-go to speed its way to the group of pace-setting leaders in the rush to Web services – which both CEO David Litwack and technology evangelist (now CTO) Steve Benfield were certain represented the biggest thing to hit the software industry since the advent of the Internet itself.

Two and a half years later, the company is still keeping up the pace as a Web services frontrunner. SilverStream was among the first to ship products providing comprehensive support for SOAP, WSDL and UDDI, as well as important emerging specifications such as Web Services Flow Language (WSFL), just as it was also among the first vendors to ship a J2EE-compatible application server, and the first to deliver J2EE-compatible products that run on other leading application servers including WebSphere and WebLogic.

At JavaOne this week in San Francisco, it is showcasing the very latest version of the “eXtend” Web services development platform, which it already had in place (before almost any other company in the space) at last year’s JavaOne and which it has been refining ever since so as to help developers and their organizations get the best out of of Java, XML, and Web services.

What does the SilverStream eXtend family offer? Interoperability. For all that it is a Java player first and foremost, SilverStream’s goal has all along been to deliver J2EE- and Web services-based products that are cross-platform compatible and interoperable with all leading platforms (including .NET) “Interoperability is key to the widespread adoption of Web services,” says CTO Steve Benfield, “yet despite existing standards the industry still suffers from proprietary implementations that lock customers into particular vendor platforms.”

As befits SilverStream's leadership position in key Internet and J2EE standards, SilverStream has already joined the Web Services Interoperability Organization, known as the WS-I. “After closely evaluating the benefits of the WS-I, we felt that SilverStream could help the organization and its members achieve industry-wide consensus and realize the promise of Web services standards, as well as to help create a level playing field for customers interested in pursuing Web services strategies," explains Benfield.

While SilverStream will in a general kind of way be helping the WS-I to promote Web services interoperability across platforms, applications and programming languages, the SilverStream eXtend family of tools will much more specifically be helping developers with developing, deploying, and managing Web services-based applications.

The SilverStream eXtend product suite ships with the proven SilverStream app server at its core (eXtend Application Server). This is, Benfield explains, a comprehensive foundation for building and deploying high-performance, portable applications using J2EE and Web services. The upcoming eXtend app server 4.0--due to ship in Q2--will be fully J2EE 1.3 compatible, Benfield adds, and SilverStream is offering an early access program which developers will be able to find out about at JavaOne.

The SilverStream eXtend suite consists of: SilverStream eXtend Composer, its award winning XML integration server; SilverStream eXtend Director, a J2EE application framework; and SilverStream eXtend Workbench, which is already available for download at ( http://www.silverstream.com/workbench).

SilverStream eXtend Composer 3.5 is the first commercially available product in the world based on IBM’s emerging WSFL standard (Web Services Flow Language). So if you’re on the lookout for a product suite that’s standards-driven and can enable your organization to rapidly build Web services from your existing enterprise system, orchestrate those services into high-level process flows, and deliver them in advanced Web, wireless, and portal applications...then SilverStream may have just the answer!
