Mobile J2ME Apps from Students and Companies Win New Awards

(March 14, 2002) - Why shouldn't the world's leading supplier of mobile phones, with its listings on six of the world's major exchanges, also get close to its grassroots users? Accordingly, Finnish-based Nokia had the idea last November of launching a "Nokia Mobile Challenge" and trying to identify the best mobile apps in various categories including communications and enhanced productivity.

Four months and 500 entries later, the judges of the Nokia contest selected the applications that in their view showed the best combination of mobility, quality, and usability.

In the Java (J2ME) category, they recognized three students for creating outstanding Java applications: Lukasz Luzar of Poland for a currency trading application, Ram Kumar of Malaysia for an e-mail client application, and Michael Behrisch of Germany for a game called "Koloris."

As well as honoring students, Nokia sought companies that had created easy-to-use, practical, and attractive mobile applications for a wide audience. In the communications category the winner was the Canadian company Clearigo Solutions Inc whose "clearBUGS" is a time-saving J2ME client application allowing field service personnel to report problems from the actual site and assign them to appropriate colleagues via mobile devices.

A German company, Hartmann-Software, won the productivity enhancer category with its "QuickShop" - an application for enabling people to select their favorite dishes from a database in the Internet, and to import the ingredients of the recipe right into their mobile phone's shopping list.

"The success of this contest," Jouko Hayrynen, vice president, Forum Nokia, told JDJ News Desk, "reflects the huge interest of mobile application developers in the Java programming language, one of the key enabling application technologies of interoperable mobile services for the future."

The winning applications were on display at the CeBIT technology fair this week in Hannover, Germany. For more information, see www.forum.nokia.com.
