"Freeware" War Ignites in J2EE App Server Market
"Freeware" War Ignites in J2EE App Server Market

(November 12, 2001) - As if it weren't enough that IBM's 34% share of the app server market, courtesy of its WebSphere Application Server, is now within a whisker of BEA's 36% share via its WebLogic Server: a whole new wave of competition is about break. One which will have both BEA Systems and perhaps even IBM thinking hard how best to respond.

Sun and HP and Oracle are the three biggest contenders, and no fewer than two of the three are aiming to loosen the BEA/IBM former stranglehold on the J2EE app server market by giving away their app servers.

In HP's case, the move is being relied on to stimulate interest in its revenue-generating Web services stack; in Sun's case, bundling its iPlanet app server in for free with Solaris would truly unsettle BEA, sinceWebLogic Server is to date the most popular application server on Solaris.

Sun's software chief Pat Sueltz has reassured concerned BEA officials that free bundling isn't being contemplated until sometime next year at the earliest, but HP's Andre Pino says HP won't be so shy.

This may well be HP's attempt to succeed in the middleware market where "E-speak" (its proprietary Web services architecture) seems to have failed. The purchase of Bluestone in 2000 was a strong indicator that it was maybe planning to switch to some kind of "Plan B."

Continuing the free-lunch flavor of the week, Sun has also just announced - as part of its "Sun ONE" starter kit - a bundle throwing in a free developer license for iPlanet's app server. It may take more than that, though, to dislodge the likes of BEA and IBM, whose tentacles reach wide and deep into the enterprise market.

HP-AS is expected to ship November 19th, 2001. (http://www.bluestone.com/products/hp-as/default.htm ).

So when Systinet in Q2 of 2004 unveiled version 5.0 of its flagship Systinet Server for Java, Systinet Server for C++ and Systinet UDDI Registry products, did that mean they too joined the app server race, or is that another thing entirely?
