Architecting for the Cloud with Cloud Foundry and Bluemix
As the world moves towards more DevOps and microservices, application deployment to the cloud ought to become a lot simpler. The microservices architecture, which is the basis of many new age distributed systems such as OpenStack, NetFlix and so on, is at the heart of Cloud Foundry - a complete developer-oriented Platform as a Service (PaaS) that is IaaS agnostic and supports vCloud, OpenStack and AWS.
In his session at 17th Cloud Expo, Raghavan "Rags" Srinivas, an Architect/Developer Evangelist at IBM, will discuss the microservices architecture, 12-factor app, containers, etc., and how to architect applications for the cloud in general and Cloud Foundry in particular. He will harness the power of dependency injection that Spring provides to pick a variety of data sources and services.
Attend this demo-oriented session in which he will cover the basics of Cloud Foundry and walk through an application that was previously hosted outside the cloud and how to stand it up in a cloud with some minimal [mostly] configuration changes using Spring Cloud and other related projects. He will also cover many of the Non Functional Requirements (NFR), which is typically in the domain of the architect such as scaling, security and HA and how applications can leverage Bluemix for these.
After attending this session attendees will walk away with a better understanding of Platform as a Service and Cloud Foundry in general, and Bluemix in particular and how the ecosystem enables deploying applications to the cloud a lot easier. Attendees will also be able to understand how to enable logging, remote debugging, monitoring and so on by turning a few knobs in the platform.
Rags brings with him over 25 years of hands-on software development and over 15 years of architecture and technology evangelism experience. He has evangelized and influenced the architecture of a number of emerging technology areas. He is also a repeat JavaOne rock star speaker award winner.
Rags holds a Master's degree in Computer Science from the Center of Advanced Computer Studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He likes to hike (has hiked the Everest Base Camp when he was a few pounds lighter), run and generally be outdoors but most of all loves to eat.

Containers & Microservices Expo To Be Colocated with Cloud Expo Silicon Valley, November 3-5, 2015 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, CA
Containers and microservices have become topics of intense interest throughout the cloud developer and enterprise IT communities.
Microservices focuses on the business and technology of the software architecture design pattern, in which complex applications are composed of small, independent processes communicating with each other using language-agnostic APIs.
Containers are not being considered for the first time by the cloud community, but a current era of re-consideration has pushed them to the top of the cloud agenda.
Rather than just stuff an OS into a container, for example, developers and deployers should consider a spectrum of microservices and what they can do.
