Akana has announced the availability of the new Akana Healthcare Solution. The API-driven solution helps healthcare organizations accelerate their transition to being secure, digitally interoperable businesses. It leverages the Health Level Seven International Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (HL7 FHIR) standard to enable broader business use of medical data. Akana developed the Healthcare Solution in response to healthcare businesses that want to increase electronic, multi-device access to health records while reducing operating costs and complying with government regulations.
“APIs are key to interoperable healthcare, and in general, to a healthcare organization’s success in this consumer-led, connected world,” said Alistair Farquharson, CTO of Akana. “APIs unlock the data that is hidden in the electronic health records (EHRs) and standards like HL7 FHIR give us a common language to communicate. Akana’s Digital Healthcare solution reduces integration and operating costs, improves healthcare outcomes and enable businesses to innovate and unleash digital healthcare.”
Healthcare providers are embarking on the second and third stages of the Meaningful Use regulation, defined as having the ability to perform advanced clinical processing and improve patient outcomes. In order to be successful in leveraging EHR data for higher level processing and improved patient outcomes, the data locked within the EHR and other proprietary data sources must be made available for use in a secure and controlled manner. The Akana solution solves this problem by opening up secure access to data in EHRs.
Akana’s Healthcare Solution combines the power of the Akana API Management platform with HL7 FHIR and preconfigured healthcare assets to provide an end-to-end solution for API-enabled healthcare. This solution approach addresses a basic industry need. Multiple healthcare organizations must typically work together for a single patient’s healthcare outcome. The communication channels between the hospitals, specialists, labs and others serving the patient must be open and able to securely transfer EHR data. Using APIs reduces the time and cost of partner integration as well as improve patient outcomes with more readily available data. For healthcare partners that want to take advantage of APIs for this kind of data sharing, Akana’s Healthcare Solution manages the required API-related onboarding and communications. It allows for controlled, managed and secure access to the APIs carrying sensitive patient information between partners.
The Akana solution helps organization more easily secure and manage APIs that connect devices to EHRs in healthcare’s Internet of Things (IoT). Healthcare has long embraced the IoT concept. The transfer of data from healthcare devices into a patient’s EHR is a factor in that patient’s health outcome. It will affect the success of the healthcare provider and that of the device provider. The APIs delivering this data must be easily provisioned and integrated, secured, scalable, and auditable.
Akana’s Healthcare Solution focuses on the complete lifecycle of the API, starting with design and continuing through run and consumption. It offers DevOps and continuing delivery capabilities with audits and accountability. The Akana Healthcare Solution highlights include:

The @DevOpsSummit at Cloud Expo - to be held November 3-5, 2015, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, California - will expand the DevOps community, enable a wide sharing of knowledge, and educate delegates and technology providers alike. Recent research has shown that DevOps dramatically reduces development time, the amount of enterprise IT professionals put out fires, and support time generally. Time spent on infrastructure development is significantly increased, and DevOps practitioners report more software releases and higher quality.

DevOps Summit Power Panel | Balancing the Three Pillars of DevOps
In this @DevOpsSummit Power Panel - moderated by Andi Mann (founder of @Sageable) - Shannon Williams, co-founder of Rancher Labs; Haseeb Budhani, co-founder and CEO of Soha; and Dalibor Siroky, Director and co-founder at Plutora; discussed how to balance these three pillars of DevOps, where to focus attention (and resources), where organizations might slip up with the wrong focus, how to manage change and risk in all three areas, what is possible and what is not, where to start, and especially how new structures, processes, and technologies can help drive a new DevOps culture.
Microservices & IoT Power Panel at @DevOpsSummit
In this Power Panel at @DevOpsSummit, moderated by Jason Bloomberg, president of Intellyx, panelists Roberto Medrano, Executive Vice President at Akana; Lori MacVittie, Evangelist for F5 Networks; and Troy Topnik, ActiveState's Technical Product Manager; and Otis Gospodnetić, founder of Sematext; peeled away the buzz and discuss the important architectural principles behind implementing IoT solutions for the enterprise. As remote IoT devices and sensors become increasingly intelligent, they become part of our distributed cloud environment, and we must architect and code accordingly. At the very least, you'll have no problem filling in your buzzword bingo cards.
Containers & Microservices Expo To Be Colocated with @DevOpsSummit Silicon Valley, November 3-5, 2015 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, CA
Containers and microservices have become topics of intense interest throughout the cloud developer and enterprise IT communities.
Microservices focuses on the business and technology of the software architecture design pattern, in which complex applications are composed of small, independent processes communicating with each other using language-agnostic APIs.
Containers are not being considered for the first time by the cloud community, but a current era of re-consideration has pushed them to the top of the cloud agenda.
Rather than just stuff an OS into a container, for example, developers and deployers should consider a spectrum of microservices and what they can do.
