Dell To Carve Up its Main Business Unit
Joe Marengi will be leaving at the end of March

Joe Marengi, the 51-year-old general manager of Dell's commercial business group, which includes servers, storage and PC and accounts for 85% of the company's revenues, will be leaving at the end of March, retiring they say, and then Dell is going split the unit into two separate units.

One, called the commercial business unit, will focus on large corporations, Dell's main stock-in-trade, and will be run by Bill Rodrigues. The other, called the public business unit, will concentrate on government, education and healthcare and will be run by David Marmonti.

Dell, a company in search of solutions, has lost its edge; HP is now the hot PC company.

Joe Marengi serves as senior vice president and was formerly the general manager of Dell's Commercial Business Group. In this role, Marengi was responsible for the Dell units serving medium business, large corporate, government, education and healthcare customers in the United States. He also was responsible for Dell's services business.

During his nearly decade-long tenure at Dell, Marengi also has served in several other leadership roles, including sr. vice president and co-GM of Dell Americas, responsible for all sales, marketing, services and manufacturing operations.

Joe Marengi joined Dell in July 1997 from Novell, where he was president and chief operating officer. He joined Novell in 1989 as vice president of the Eastern region and moved through successive promotions to become executive vice president of worldwide sales and field operations.

For 10 years prior to joining Novell, Mr. Marengi served in various other executive, sales and information management positions.

He earned a bachelor's degree in public administration from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and a master's degree in management from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He serves on the Corporate Advisory Board of the USC Marshall School of Business and also serves on the board of directors Hovnanian Enterprises.

Last month, amid multiple government probes into its books, Dell changed its CFO Jim Schneider, replacing him with former American Airlines bigwig and long-time Dell board member Donald Carty, a shift that took effect January 1.
