AMD Claims an Edge in Distant 45nm
IBM would have 45nm parts in mid-'08 using newfangled ultra-low-K interconnect technology

AMD has only started making 65nm chips and Intel has already started making 45nm ones so AMD said that it and its buddy IBM would have 45nm parts in mid-'08 using newfangled ultra-low-K interconnect technology and immersion lithography, which should give AMD a performance-per-watt edge.

AMD Opens Futuristic Lab
Sounding infinitely hopeful, AMD has just opened a new Advanced Architecture and Technology Lab in Redmond that's supposed to look beyond the five-year time horizon. It's put it under the direction of AMD Fellow and chief architectural officer Rich Witek, who worked on the ARM, StrongARM, Alpha and PowerPC and holds 22 patents in CPU, cache and system design. It plans to staff the place with 30-40 people and could open similar centers elsewhere.

Since AMD can't talk about their current product or manufacturing technology as being world beaters, they can only brag about something that wouldn't occur until 2 years from now. I recall AMD scoffed at Intel for comparing their future Conroe chip to the current AMD chips back in the spring of 2006!
