NAS Virtualization Keeps Its Growth Promises
A recent end-user survey reveals that 41% of sites with over one terabyte of disk storage have implemented NAS Virtualization

SANTA BARBARA, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 12/19/06 -- A recent end-user survey conducted by Peripheral Concepts, Inc. reveals that 41% of sites with over one terabyte of disk storage have implemented NAS Virtualization. This finding confirms users' last year forecast predicting a two-fold increase in 2006. The percentage of data stored on NAS continues to grow -- sites storing over 30% of their data on NAS have grown to 44% from 29% in 2005 and 25% in 2004.

File management and block management are deemed equally important, with NFS access leading, and considered mandatory by half the population. There is more office data stored on NAS than on SAN. Other applications include consumer data and rich media

By creating a single logical view across multiple NAS systems, NAS virtualization (or aggregation) addresses the scaling, performance, and management problems that have plagued NAS scalability for years. Transparent scalability is cited as the major product selection criteria, followed by performance, and the ability to merge NAS units from different vendors.

Most NAS virtualization products offer a number of additional services; the most wanted being remote replication. 27% of the population considers NAS virtualization to be very important in its ability to solve one of their major problems. The survey indicates that a majority of IT managers prefer to purchase an integrated NAS system as opposed to purchasing software only.

The survey addressed a random population of 35,000 sites. 4,000 respondents managing over 10,000 NAS participated. Their input forms the basis of preliminary findings covering system configurations and implementation plans. For a selected population of 117 IT operations managing 846 NAS systems, this report ranks issues and needs, and analyzes applications and plans. Data collected allows segmentation by company revenue, number of employees, industry, operating system, or disk capacity.

NAS and NAS Virtualization is the fifth in a series of reports to be issued by the end of January 2007. Other reports cover:

-- Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) and Data Classification
-- Backup, D2D and Virtual Tape libraries (VTL)
-- Data Protection and CDP
-- iSCSI and SAN
-- Data Retention, Archiving and Content Addressed Storage (CAS)
