NetApp Buys Security Company
Deal to Acquire Decru Reportedly Worth $272 Million

Network Appliance (NetApp) has announced its purchase of security company Decru, but does not plan to integrate its capabilities into existing products. NetApp CEO Dan Warmenhoven said on a conference call that Decru's DataFort systems will continued to be offered separately.

The NetApp announcement comes in the wake of major strategic announcements and acquisitions in the fast-growing storage industry, from HP's revamping to Sun's StorageTek acquisition, to the unveiling of the Larry Ellison-funded Pillar Axiom systems last week.

Sunnyvale, CA-based NetApp's deal in buying the smaller Redwood City, CA-based company doesn't seem to indicate a major strategic shift, but rather, may be a defensive-oriented effort to keep other market leaders in a highly competitive business from strengthening their own product portfolios during this dynamic period.

A Decru DataFort

"The combination with our larger sales force, channels and broader account base will accelerate sales in both government and commercial accounts," Warmenhoven said. "We really feel that this has the potential to be a fast-growth market segment."

Redwood City, Calif.-based Decru's DataFort systems are designed to protect firewalled data, and the company has seen a recent spike in sales in the wake of many well-publicized security scares in recent months. Decru systems are adaptable to both NAS and SAN storage strategies, as well as sub-strategies within those two broad categories. The storage industry is currently defined by a handful of leaders within each category. The Pillar Axiom announcement last week stated that this new company will address both strategies in unified fashion, something that appears to be a holy grail of sorts for all leading storage vendors.

NetApp will pay 80 percent stock and 20 percent cash for Decru, and wishes to finalize the deal by the beginning of Q4 2005.
