Cloud Computing and Open Source

Any new technology market has its own lifecycle and rhythm. From mainframes, through smartphones, there’s the early years, the rapid growth, some slowing down and inevitably a decline. Some technologies never go away completely (e.g. mainframes), while others never really get a foothold (insert your own example here). Open source was a software movement that began as an idea and now dominates how many new software offerings are marketed and sold. Open source is not a technology, but a business and legal framework within which technology is propogated. Still, the biggest companies in software are largely closed source – Oracle, SAP, etc.

Open Source Software: More Reasons It Is More Secure

Software designed by open source standards has security built in and has been found to be fielded with far fewer faults per unit of code than proprietary development houses. There are many reasons for this. This factor is especially true when the open source code is commercially supported. For example, Linux, which has the strength [...]

Zend Studio for Eclipse

In my many years of programming, almost 20 years now, I have used countless integrated development environments (IDEs). I have used everything from a simple text editor all the way up to the high-end IDEs that Sybase, IBM, and Oracle use. More recently I have come to embrace the open source movement and development in Web environments. My programming language of choice for these days is PHP, so it stands to reason that I would be looking for an IDE. Like so many other developers I followed the path of looking for the pinnacle of IDEs for PHP. I started with basic text editors, moved into text editors with code colorizations, and then into project-based development environments, and finally to a fully robust IDE. The one that I've been using for a few years now is Zend's Studio Professional.

Why "Eclipse Developer's Journal" and Why Now?

'The Eclipse ecosystem is huge and growing,' writes Eclipse Developer's Journal editor-in-chief Bill Dudney. 'The ecosystem will benefit from having an independent magazine devoted to the various aspects of Eclipse and I'm looking forward to Eclipse Developer's Journal becoming that source.'
